Close to Nuweiba in the area of El-Tarabin are the ruins of a great fortress built in the 16th Century by the Mameluk Sultan Ashraf Qansouh El Ghouri. He wanted to protect the Sinai from invaders, as well as to ensure the safety of travellers to the port city of Tarabin. His efforts were in vain as the Turks invaded the area shortly after. The fortress has a fresh water well which served for centuries as a water source for the Tabarin Bedouins living in this area.
